History

The first decade of Home Share Now

The Home Share Now story began in 2001, when an elderly gentleman asked the Montpelier Housing Task Force why there wasn’t a home sharing program to serve central Vermont. Two years of research and planning led to the creation of Home Share of Central Vermont under the umbrella of the Central Vermont Council on Aging.

Initial funding came from a Vermont Community Development Program (VCDP) block grant and in March 2003 a director was hired to direct the new program with the help of dedicated volunteers much like HomeShare Vermont, a Chittenden County program with a two-decade track record of success. To this day, HomeShare Vermont and Home Share Now collaborate.

The years between 2003 and 2010 saw an increase in demand that spurred the realization that home sharing must embrace all ages and encourage a positive environmental impact. With a broadened outlook, Home Share of Central Vermont applied and received a second VCDP block grant.

In 2010 Home Share of Central Vermont became Home Share Now.  Far more than just a name change, Home Share Now means forward looking optimism combined with solid home sharing experience and a strong capacity to take on the housing, environmental, economic, and social challenges our community will face in the next decade!

Our staff serves Washington, Orange and Lamoille counties and some adjacent towns in Orleans, Caledonia, and Windsor counties with offices in Barre and Morrisville.  Home Share Now has its own Board of Directors and is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
